The Team, behind spillMYwine

A web designer, a business development entrepreneur and a writer walk into a bar in Kuala Lumpur. No, there's no punchline. It's how spillMYwine was conceived.

Names were bandied about and, as we all enjoy music too, we thought there must be an appropriate song for the site. The Eric Burdon and War track Spill the Wine (1970) initially seemed perfect, but then MY was added to give it a Malaysian context.

Within a few hours - and several glasses of wine - we had an idea: to create a site for wine lovers, by wine lovers. The domain was registered that same night.

spillMYwine is a platform to explore new wines, learn their stories, read global news from the wine industry, discover restaurants where wine and food truly complement each other, find the latest wine accessories, and visit vineyards around the world.

We are wine lovers, not wine experts, and that's intentional. Yes, there are 'rules' to drinking wine, but we believe rules are made to be broken - or at least bent. For us, drinking and enjoying wine comes first. We take what we write seriously, but never too seriously. Wine should be fun, light and joyful.

With very few wines produced in Asia, we take a global perspective. We have our own preferences and biases, of course, but we believe the wonder of wine is that every bottle tells a new and fascinating story that broadens our view of the world. We will endeavour to document wines in all price brackets, from common varietals to the obscure, sourced from as many global wine regions as possible.

If that sounds like you, welcome. Join us on this journey of wine discovery.
The spillMYwine Team. spillMYwine - wine lovers, not wine snobs.

Stefan Pertz

German, living in Malaysia since ages

Entrepreneur, Editor & Reluctant Beer Avoider

Stefan Pertz started his working life rather early. At 16, while most teenagers were busy being teenagers, he was already pulling shifts in local bars. Being naturally curious – and apparently unwilling to accept that “this is what we serve” was a satisfactory answer – he began exploring the wines being poured. It was the beginning of a fascination that has stayed with him ever since.

And yes, there is a twist decorating the story: Stefan is German, but given the choice between a beer and a refreshing white wine, he will quite happily reach for the wine.

His curiosity eventually made its way into academia. His MBA thesis explored terroir and its influence on the branding of alcoholic beverages – proof that even his studies could not keep wine out of the conversation.

Stefan has lived and worked in six countries, with much of his career taking him across Asia. His first overseas assignment brought him to Hong Kong, where he served as the on-site project manager for the new airport at Chek Lap Kok, supervising the installation of furniture in the departure hall.

Over the years, his career has taken a few interesting turns – from international management and business development to publishing, media, commercial vehicles, road safety and, of course, wine.

Jaqueline

Malaysian

Food Explorer, Stylist & Firm Believer in White Wine

Some people travel to see the sights. Jacqueline Tan travels to see what is being cooked.

A genuine food lover, Jacqueline has always been fascinated by the way food brings people together – and by the fact that the same ingredient can become something completely different depending on who is holding the knife, where they come from and what they grew up eating.

Her travels have therefore become something of a culinary education. Rather than simply ticking destinations off a map, she likes to discover local cooking styles, flavours and traditions. Markets, kitchens, street food stalls and restaurants all have something to teach, and Jacqueline is an enthusiastic student.

Her interest in food naturally led her into food styling, where the challenge is not merely to make something taste good, but to make it look irresistible before the first bite.

At Spill My Wine, Jacqueline puts the F into F&B. She is now expanding her knowledge of wine and exploring that wonderful space where food and wine meet. And while the learning continues, she already has one principle firmly established: Everything goes with white wine.

Perhaps that is not yet an internationally recognised wine-pairing philosophy. But Jacqueline is working on it.
